On Saturday (May 21), RCB’s fate was dependent on Mumbai’s result and a win for the Rohit Sharma-led side confirmed the Virat Kohli-starrer team’s place in the eliminator clash against Lucknow Super Giants on Wednesday (May 25) at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
The second last league stage match was a must-win game for Delhi, as they had to fetch a positive result to reach the playoffs, but they failed to do so as a result of which Royal Challengers Bangalore progressed.
The RCB players and members of the support staff were seen cheering the five-time winners against the Delhi Capitals in a social media post shared by the franchise. In the series of tweets, the players were also seen celebrating MI’s five-wicket win on Saturday.
Rohit Sharma’s poor form continues
Rohit Sharma’s miserable form continued in the last match against Delhi Capitals as he was seen struggling throughout his innings. In 14 games, Rohit managed just 268 runs at an average of 19.14 and a strike rate of 120.17. It is also the first time that he failed to score a single half-century in an IPL season.
Former franchise captain and star batter Virat Kohli’s concerned reaction after Rohit’s early dismissal went viral on the internet. He is seen covering his mouth in disbelief.
Mumbai Indians still managed to reach the 160-run target in 19.1 overs for the loss of five wickets. For the record champions of the Indian Premier League, opening batter Ishan Kishan top-scored with 48 from 35 balls, while ‘Baby AB’ Dewald Brevis contributed 37 from 33 balls.
But the star of the night was former RCB batter Tim David. The 26-year-old, who featured in one game for the Virat Kohli-led side in the 2021 edition, made the most of the first ball reprieve and hammered four sixes and two fours during his game changing 11-ball 34-run innings.
Royal Challengers will now take on Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator, on May 24. The match will be played at Eden Gardens, in Kolkata.
