Ex-Pakistani leg spinner Danish Kaneria has come down hard on his former skipper Shahid Afridi. In conversation with IANS on Thursday, the leg-spinner brought out shocking details about his time with the Pakistan Cricket Team.
Kaneria’s explosive revelations involved accusing Afridi of being “a liar and manipulator” who was “a characterless person”. Stating that he could have played much more than 18 ODI if not for Afridi, the spinner also claimed that Afridi was jealous of him.
This is what Danish Kaneria had to say about Shahid Afridi:
“He didn’t want me to be in the team. He was a liar, manipulator… because he’s a characterless person. However, my focus was only on cricket and I used to ignore all these tactics. Shahid Afridi was the only person who would go to other players and provoke them against me. I was performing well and he was jealous of me. I am proud that I played for Pakistan and am grateful,”

The spinner also stated that Afridi’s mistreatment towards him was because he was a Hindu. Kaneria also continues to maintain that he was never part of any spot-fixing and terms the allegations false.
“Some allegations were levelled against me (of spot-fixing). My name was taken with the person involved in the case. He was a friend of other Pakistani cricketers as well, including Afridi. But I don’t know why I was targeted. I just want to request the PCB to lift the ban so that I can do my work.”
The leg spinner appeared in 61 Tests and 18 One-Day Internationals for Pakistan, from 2000 to 2010. He is the top wicket-taker among spinners for Pakistan in Tests, with 261 wickets in the longer format.
