One win, that was all Dortmund needed. One win to create history and put an end to Bayern’s monopoly over Germany. But there were more twists in the story than we expected, as Dortmund faltered at the last possible hurdle on Saturday, handing Bayern Munich their 11th consecutive Bundesliga title. The Bavarians ended up winning the league, on goal difference alone. The Signal Iduna Park played hosts to Mainz, with Dortmund needing one final win to clinch their first title since 2012. What followed though, was a mix of horrifying defending and sloppy attacking threat as Dortmund barely scraped a 2-2 draw. At the very same time, Bayern made it past Koln, thanks to a marvelous goal by Jamal Musiala that wrapped up the match and continued their domination at the top.

Dortmund’s impressive form could only take them so far as the men in black and yellow crumbled within the first 15 minutes, courtesy of a Andreas Hanche-Olsen strike. Matters turned from bad to worse as Dortmund’s talisman, Sebastian Haller missed a game-changing penalty soon after. The sloppy defending and the underwhelming threat creation from players like Julian Brandt and Donyell Malen led to Die Schwarzgelben falling behind by 2 goals soon after. Edin Terzic’s men managed to get more chances into the final third during the second half, but it failed to pay any dividends. A late strike from Raphael Guerreiro provided some hope but all was lost by the time Niklas Sule tied the score-line.

In the press conference following the match, Terzic had this to say:
“Congratulations to FC Bayern. The championship is the most honest title. After conceding goals, you noticed how heavy the ball and your legs are,” We still scored two goals. And then you realise how tough this sport can be. We were only missing one goal. It is extremely painful.”
Bayern on the other hand, started with immense tenacity as Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman linked up to provide the Bavarians an early lead. The title almost slipped out of their hand with Dejan Ljubcic finding the net from the penalty spot in the 81st minute but a late strike from the wonderkid Jamal Musiala saw them through to another title, although it was won purely on goal difference. Munich though, will not mind that one bit as the city celebrates long into the night. Dortmund on the other hand, lost their best chance in modern football history as they let the title slip from their grasp, disappointing everyone from their loyal fans, to hometown hero Edin Terzic to the ever-faithful Marco Reus.
