Career as Player of Sir Alex Ferguson
Alex Ferguson began his football career with Harmony Raw Boys in Govan. before progressing to Drumchapel Amateurs, a youth club with a strong reputation for producing senior footballers.
He started his professional career as a player in 1957 when he was signed as an amateur by Queen’s Park. He played 31 matches for the club and even scored 15 goals. After completing 3 seasons with the club and not being able to become a regular starter in the team frustrated him to the extent of leaving the club. Sir Alex played for many clubs after that such as St. Johnstone, Dunfermline Athletic, Rangers, Falkirk, and Ayr United. He finished his playing career at Ayr United in 1974.
Career as a Manager of Sir Alex Ferguson
He started his managerial career in 1974 at the age of just 32. Sir Alex was appointed manager of East Stirlingshire and earned around £40 per week while working there as his part-time job. He earned the reputation of a disciplinarian at the start of his managerial career. After completing his tenure at Stirlingshire, Alex turned his attention to a new challenge at St Mirren where his tenure only lasted for 4 years he was sacked by the club as he claimed wrongful dismissal against the club at an industrial tribunal but lost and was given no leave to appeal.
In the late 1970s, Ferguson joined Aberdeen. He managed the major club of the Scottish League for 8 long years and was quite successful in his tenure. He found European success while managing Aberdeen and also in his one-year tenure while managing the Scotland National Team.
On 6 November 1986, Alex Ferguson was appointed as the new manager of Manchester United. Ferguson joined the club in a worrying condition. Alexander Chapman Ferguson was born at his grandmother’s home on Shieldhall Road in the Govan district of Glasgow on 31 December 1941, the son of Elizabeth and Alexander Beaton Ferguson. He grew up in a tenement at 667 Govan Road, which has since been demolished, where he lived with his parents and his younger brother Martin, who also became a footballer.
