Novak Djokovic didn’t have the courage to stand against his father when the latter publicly showed his support to Russia for attacking Ukraine, said Lesia Tsurenko’s coach Nikita Vlasov.
After the quarter-final match between the Serb and Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open, a video had become viral on the internet. Djokovic’s father Srdjan along with a few people were seen carrying pro-Russing flags, plus they wore t-shirts with the ‘Z’ symbol which symbolizes support for Russia. When the former World No.1 was asked about the same, he claimed his family would never support a war since they have been through one themselves.
However, Lesia Tsurenko’s Ukrainian coach criticized Djokovic for not having the courage to publicly condemn his father’s act.
“It was a stupid situation. This is my personal opinion,” Vlasov told Tribua. “Djokovic’s father said ‘Glory to Russia’ on camera and then claimed he was misunderstood. It’s not even a human act.“
“If you said so, take responsibility for your words. Djokovic also didn’t have the courage to say frankly that he didn’t support his father’s behavior,” he added. Vlasov also showed his disappointment at the 10-time Australian Open champion for not using his status to directly condemn Russia’s actions in Ukraine. He stressed that this is a good time for the Serb to use his status to call for peace. “No, they support Russia,” Vlasov accused Djokovic and his family.
Novak Djokovic won’t play in Miami Open 2024
Novak Djokovic, who didn’t take part in the going season’s first ATP 1000 tournament, the Indian Wells 2024, due to his vaccination status has withdrawn from the Miami Open in the US as well. The six-time Miami Open champion is still unvaccinated, and so the US government’s strict mandate won’t allow him to enter the country as he failed in his bid to get a special exemption.
Since the 35-year-old did not play in Indian Wells nor would he take part in the Miami Open, he lost the top spot in the ATP rankings after Carlos Alcaraz defeated Daniil Medvedev in the final of the Indian Wells 2024. The Spaniard also needs to win the Miami Open title to retain his spot. Now Djokovic will focus on the clay and the Monte Carlo Masters, which starts on April 9th.
