Perry played minor hockey in Peterborough before he was drafted fifth overall by the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 2001. In 2003, he was selected fifth overall by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Then in 2005, he made his debut in NHL for the ducks. His first career goal came against the Edmonton Oilers in October. He stayed with this team till 2019.
Dallas Stars signed Perry in July with a $1.5 million contract for one year. The Stars did not re-sign him and Montreal Canadians signed Perry as a free agent in December 2020. With this team, he reached his second consecutive Stanley Cup and third overall final in 2021.
Perry wasn’t re-signed by the Canadians so he next joined his present team, the Tampa Bay Lightning in July 2021. The Lightning advanced to the final of the 2022 Stanley Cup with Perry becoming the second player in NHL history to reach the finals in three consecutive years with three different teams. He became the first player to score a goal in the Stanley Cup Finals with four different teams.
