Two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso has made it evidently clear that he did not move to Aston Martin to be a mere midfield contender. He expects Aston Martin to deliver an impressive car and for them to deliver it sooner rather than later.
Ages Like Fine Wine
The 41-year-old Spaniard has left Formula 1 fans bewildered how he’s still consistently putting in impressive performances at the highest level in 2022. Fernando Alonso finished 9th in the Driver Standings for the 2022 Formula 1 season. But that standing is not truly reflective of the Spaniard’s season. Alonso displayed stellar performances in qualifying and impressive displays on race weekends. In head-to-head, he even out-qualified Alpine teammate Esteban Ocon 12-10. Unfortunately, car reliability issues became a recurring pattern and would often let him down. He accumulated six DNF’s over the course of the season. Alonso himself believes he lost out on over sixty points due to car (un)reliability and bad luck.
But what was evident was that the Spaniard still hasn’t lost his charm. Some of his defending and aggressiveness on the racing track would make one think it’s the young and daring Fernando in the old yellow Renault suit from his championship winning seasons in 2005 and 2006.
After four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement from Formula 1, Aston Martin went looking for a perfect blend of experience and talent. Fernando Alonso seemed like the perfect jigsaw puzzle fit for Aston Martin.

Fernando Alonso And His Hunger For A Third World Title
Alonso is in a race against time. He would love nothing else more than driving a car worthy of challenging for the World Championship. Alonso has set high expectations for his chapter at Aston Martin. He has faith in the British team’s vision and potential and expects to be competing for the title within the next two or three seasons. He told Nextgen-Auto, “Considering what there was in the market, Aston martin is one of the teams who can achieve this in two, three years.”

Not Here For An Eternity
The two-time champion realizes the importance of everything working out for him at Aston Martin. “It’s important at my age. I don’t have eternity ahead of me,” he added. Fernando Alonso is set to partner with Lance Stroll at Aston Martin. After testing week at Abu Dhabi, Alonso exclaimed how he felt honoured driving for Aston Martin. He is committed to this new and arguably last chapter of his illustrious career and is determined to succeed for Aston Martin in their stride towards the Constructors’ Championship.
Meanwhile, Alpine have declared Pierre Gasly as Alonso’s replacement after a botched public fiasco with Oscar Piastri.
