The South Korean national football team was the favorite to win the AFC Asian Cup. Moreover, they were led by their star, Son Heung-Min. But their campaign ended by losing 0-2 against Jordan in the semifinal.
It was a disappointing outing despite reaching the semifinals. They won only one game in the group stage games and almost lost their round of 16 and quarterfinal games. Looking at their disappointing AFC Asian Cup outing, their captain, Son Heung-Min, takes the blame.
Son Heung-Min said:
“I guess I wasn’t good enough as captain and didn’t lead the team well!”

Did Son Heung-Min fail as captain in the AFC Asian Cup?
Son made six appearances and scored three goals in the AFC Asian Cup. Moreover, he had a player rating of at least four stars in all the games. He was the MVP in almost every game. But regarding his captaincy, things might be questionable.
These are all their AFC Asian Cup results:
- Bahrain: 3-1
- Jordan: 2-2
- Malaysia: 3-3
- Saudi Arabia (round of 16): 1-1 (4-2 in penalties)
- Australia (Quarterfinal): 2-1
- Jordan (Semifinal): 0-2 (lost)
In all six games, there were no clean sheets on their side. Moreover, in all their games except the Bahrain match, they leveled the score or won it at the last minute. They struggled throughout the campaign, but Son is not the only one to be blamed.
