World No.1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia will take on France’s Gael Monfils in the second round of the 2022 Madrid Open on Tuesday, May 3.
Novak Djokovic admitted that he is still not playing at his desired level, but is getting there. Having missing the Australian Open and the Sunshine masters, the Serbian entered the clay season with very little match fitness. He exited the Monte Carlo Masters in the very first round after loosing to Davidovich Fokina. There were signs of him getting back to form in Belgrade and Madrid could see the World No. 1 return to his elements. The 20-time Grand Slam champion won his 86th tour-level title at the Paris Masters last year but has been without a title since then. Djokovic has a remarkable 80.1% win record on clay, which includes 17 titles. There’s a lot of expectation on the Serb to gain back his form.
Gael Monfils arrived at Madrid without playing a match for over one month. He exited from the Miami open after loosing to the Argentine Cerundolo in the second round of the tournament. He was not seen playing any match since the and was expected to be shaky in his first match at Madrid. Contrary to the expectations, Monfils completely dominated his opponent Gimeno Valero and ended the match in just 56 minutes. Given his head to head record against Djokovic, he’d be keen to get revenge on the Serb this time.
