Novak Djokovic has scripted an unwanted record after losing the quarterfinal match against 20-year-old Holger Rune at the 2024 Italian Open on Wednesday (May 17). The Serb recorded the most number of defeats as a World No.1 as it was his 70th defeat.
After his previous loss in the Banja Luka event, prior to the Italian Open loss, the 35-year-old joined former World No.1 Pete Sampras with 69 losses as the World No.1. Sampras registered the record during his 286-week reign as a top player, while the Serb’s defeats came during his 387-weak as No.1.
The third on the list is Roger Federer with 56 defeats during his 310-week reign, while fourth on the list is Ivan Lendl, who achieved this during a span of 270 weeks at No.1. Also Read: Iga Swiatek Vs Donna Vekic Match Prediction, Head-To-Head, Preview, And Live Stream | Italian Open
Andy Roddick believes Novak Djokovic needs to get physically fit before French Open
Former World No.1 Andy Roddick expressed concern over Novak Djokovic’s fitness ahead of the 2024 French Open, which is slated to start on May 28. The Serb failed to make a semi-final appearance in all the clay-court tournaments he has played this season.
After his early exits at the Monte-Carlo Masters and in Banja Luka, the 35-year-old lost to Holger Rune in the quarterfinals. The 22-time Grand Slam champion recently struggled with an elbow injury. That is why Roddick says Djokovic needs to get physically fit for the five-set matches. “Novak needs to get his body right, needs to feel like he’s physically fit to go three out of five [sets] seven times in 15 days at Roland Garros. He has proven he can do that time and time again,” Roddick said while speaking to Tennis Channel.
