Former Wimbledon champion Mario Bartoli backed Emma Raducanu over her endorsement commitments by citing the examples of Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova.
Raducanu has often faced criticism due to her inconsistent performance since winning her lone Grand Slam at the 2021 US Open as a Qualifier. She is currently recuperating from injuries and won’t feature in the 2023 French Open as well as the Wimbledon.
Raducanu has always faced criticism as fans and tennis pundits slam her for losing her focus in tennis due to the endorsement deals. But Bartoli, who has seen Williams and Sharapova signing numerous endorsement deals, while still remaining huge forces in tennis, believes, Raducanu will be able to deal with this. “She has so many more years ahead of her and if she can get her body ready, I don’t think there is a lack of focus. Of course, there are endorsements but Maria Sharapova had a lot of endorsements but she was extremely focused throughout her career and Serena Williams was the same,” Bartoli said in an interview with Sky Sports.
Bartoli feels Raducanu just needs more time to do as the 20-year-old is the media’s favorite since her maiden Grand Slam victory.
“Players can have a lot of endorsements, but they’re able to deal with that, so that’s not the issue for Emma. She didn’t have the time to get herself mentally and physically ready to deal with everything that’s been thrown at her since she won that Grand Slam, but it doesn’t mean she won’t be ready. It just requires slightly more time. Give her time and she will be fine,” she added.
