Former World No. 1 Andy Murray is pushing his body to limits that are sometimes scary, says former tennis player Julien Varlet

Andy Murray’s playing competitive tennis and giving tough competition to opponents after hip surgery is nothing less than a miracle. But for Murray, it’s his hard work and elite mentality that made him push his body to limits, which sometimes wonders people, and of them is former tennis player Julien Varlet.

Murray underwent hip surgery twice, first in 2018 and then the next year. But after his surgery, many thought the Briton’s career was over. But he made an amazing comeback at the Australian Open in 2024. Although he faced an early exit, he did reach the final of the Qatar Open where he was defeated by Russia’s Daniil Medvedev. Right now, he is ranked No. 57 at the ATP ranking, making a drastic jump from outside 800 in 2018. Varlet wondered how Murray was able to make the terrific comeback, and wished to spend a day with the 35-year-old to see how he finds a way to play.

I tried but it was crazy rough and I didn’t have the team support that Murray gets. I wasn’t at his level either! I had one hour of autonomy on the court. I couldn’t keep up,” Varlet said in an interview with Tennis Majors. Julien Varlet says he has tremendous respect for Andy Murray

Notably, Julien Varlet had suffered a hip injury in his late 20s but unlike Murray, the Frenchman ended his career in 2004 because he failed to recover.

When I watched him in Australia playing for five hours…That guy is a monster! Each time I see him, I wonder how he does it. I’d love to spend just one day with him to see how he finds a way to play at this level. He’s pushing his body to limits that are sometimes scaring me but it’s his choice,” he added. Varlet then added in the interview that he has tremendous respect for the Briton because of how he is doing kinds of stuff physically and mentally. “He barely wins a match in under three hours, he keeps fighting. He loves the game, that’s for sure,” Varlet added.

Meanwhile, Murray is gearing up to play at the first 1000 Masters event at the Monte Carlo Masters. He will be taking on Alex de Minaur in an opening-round clash. Also Read: Die-Hard Novak Djokovic Fan Shares Heartwarming Instagram Post After The Serb Surprises Her In Monte Carlo
