World No.12 Jannik Sinner of Italy will take on the American Tommy Paul in the first round of the 2022 Madrid Open on Monday, May 2.
Jannik Sinner has been playing very good tennis this year so far. But, unfortunately the 20 year old Italian has been facing a lot of issues related to his physical fitness. He withdrew from his match against Nick Kyrgios in the Indian Wells Masters after having good first two rounds. In the Miami Open, he was going strong before he had to retire due to a foot blister in the quarterfinals. He had a good start to this year’s clay season in the Monte Carlos Masters. After defeating Coric, Ruusuvouri and Rublev to reach the quarterfinal, he fell to Germany’s Alexander Zverev in 3 very long sets. Again, Sinner seemed be struggling with his fitness in the match. But, having not played a match for more than 15 days, the Italian should be back with full fitness.
Tommy Paul has been pretty inconsistent throughout this year. Even though he started his year very well, he has failed to keep his form going. With the clay season starting and it being his least favourite surface, it his going to be more difficult for the American to improve his tennis. His last match in the surface was against Richard Gasquet, to whom he went down in straight sets. Tommy Paul is undoubtedly a threat in hard courts, but clay will continue to pose challenges for him. He might give a fight against Sinner, but the Italian is most likely to prevail.
