The top-ranked Pole knocked out Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-2, 7-6 (7) in the semi-final and it was her toughest match in the tournament. Swiatek can become the third woman since 2000 to win three Roland Garros after Serena Williams and Martina Hingis. And Swiatek, 22, can even become the youngest woman to win a total of four Slams since Williams in 2002.
Though fans rather wanted to watch Iga Swiatek versus Aryna Sabalenka in the final, Karolina Muchova poured water into that plan by shocking the Belarusian in what was one of the most thrilling matches of the Roland Garros. The Sabalenka-Swiatek would have been the first No.1 vs No.1 match at the ongoing tournament since Williams beat Maria Sharapova in the 2013 final.
Muchova clinched the semifinals victory with the 7-6(7-5), 6-7(5-7), 7-5 win over Sabalenka. The 26-year-old Muchova became the first player in the tournament to take a set off the powerful Sabalenka and after rallying from down 5-2 in the final set, she crushed the dream of the World No.2 of lifting another Slam this year.
