MLS Round-Up: Thiago Almada wonderclass, Philadelphia wreck Columbus and more

Major League Soccer could not have asked for a more eventful season opener. The day fueled by late goals and comebacks has been a spectacle to watch. World Cup winner Thiago Almada was the major highlight of the day with his brilliant stoppage-time goals.

Nashville opens the tournament with a win

Nashville SC started its quest for its maiden win commenced with a win against NYCFC. Overlooking home fans, Matt Zimmerman started the goal bank at 34′ assisted by newbie Fafa Picault. Canadian winger Jacob Shaffelburg extended the lead in the 80th minute.

Canadian Teams start off on the wrong foot

DC United 3-2 Toronto: DC United nailed down Toronto at Audi Field in one of the amazing matches of the night. Inter Miami 2-0 Montreal: David Beckham’s Inter Miami had no struggle defeating Montreal at home ground. The Floridians scored twice and conceded none to win the season opener. Ukrainian defender Serhiy Kryvtsov scored the first goal just minutes before the first half ended. Shanyder Borgelin braced the net in the 76′ minute past James Pantemis of Montreal

Vancouver 1-2 Real Salt Lake: At Vancouver, The Whitecaps led the game for 46 minutes before giving in to two successive goals. Javain Brown scored the first goal of the game at 24′ assisted by Gressel. The first half and the beginning of the second half sailed smoothly in favor of Vancouver. At 70′, Justin Glad and at 72′ Damir Kreilach netted goals past Yohei Takaoka to turn the game in Real Salt Lake’s favor.

Argentinians Julian Carranza and Thiago Almada shine on Matchweek 1

Philadelphia Union 4-1 Columbus Crew: The match results might show one goal in Columbus’ stats, but all goals were scored by Phillies. Jakob Glesnes accidentally shot into their own net handing the Crew an upper hand. Midfielder Daniel Gazdag at 45+3′ and 72′ netted two penalties. Loanee Julian Carranza also struck twice to help the Philadelphians go four against the Ohioans. The game oversaw Philadelphia going atop the Eastern Conference tables with a GD of +3.

Atlanta United 2-1 San Jose: The Californian outlet San Jose Earthquakes ruled the game. They scored in 12′ minutes thanks to a Jeremy Ebobisse goal. Atlanta fought tooth and nail to come back. Argentine and World Cup winner Thiago Almada scored two goals after the normal 90 minutes. A direct pass from the corner into Almada’s legs by Brooks Lennon. Almada stopped, and shot into the top of the goal to equalize at 90+3′. Minutes later, Thiago Almada took a screaming freekick past Daniel into the top left corner. Followed were a shirt-off celebration and a Georgian victory.

Texans could’ve gone without the last day

Cincinnati 2-1 Houston Dynamo: Ohioans Cincinnati won the first game of the season by upsetting Houston. Sergio Santos netted the first goal of the game for Cincinnati. Although Tate Schmidt equalized for the Texans in the 45th minute, all it took for Cincinnati was a break. Soon after the beginning of the second half, Nigerian Obinna Nwobodo scored for Cincinnati.

Austin 2-3 St Louis SC: Newcomers St Louis City SC defeated Austin FC to celebrate their debut game in style. St Louis’ Tim Parker scored the first goal of the game followed by an equalizer at 45+4′ by Driussi of Austin. Jon Gallagher’s Goal at 72′ saw Austin take a lead in the game. The joy lasted six minutes when Jared Stroud equalized the game again. At 86′ Brazilian de Mello braced a goal past Austin’ Stuver.

FC Dallas 0-1 Minnesota: Colombian striker Mender Garcia scored a championing goal in the 48th minute. The 24-year-old thus ensured an eventful night for Texans. Dallas’ loss meant all three teams from Texas failed to win on the first day back in MLS.

New England and Orlando sail through sole goals

Orlando City FC 1-0 NY Red Bulls: Orlando broke through a winless series by defeating the New Jersey Outfit NY Red Bulls. Sean Nealis’ handball in the penalty area awarded Orlando a penalty kick in the 48th minute. Facundo Torres converted the kick into a goal. The New york Red Bulls attempted at couple many shots, all ending in dismay as Pedro Gallesse recorded his 20th career clean sheet.

Charlotte FC 0-1 New England Revolution: Henry Kessler’s lone goal in the 89th minute helped New England Revolution to defeat second season Charlotte FC. New England Revolution carved history a season ago with record-high points. The victory can be seen as a beginning of back to glory for the Massachusset’s side.

Meanwhile, Chicago Fire, Seattle Sounders play tonight. The LA sides, Colorado Rapids, Sporting Kansas FC, and Portland are yet to play.
