Sweden is gearing up to host the 2024 World Juniors in the vibrant city of Gothenburg. The “Junior Crowns” aspires of clinching their third-ever gold medal. The Swedish side has won the 1981 and 2012 IIHF World U20 Championships. Their best performance in recent years is the Bronze medal-finish in 2020 and 2022.
They have secured the silver medal on 11 occasions and bronze seven times, facing a unique hurdle in claiming the coveted gold. Last year, their pursuit ended in a heart-wrenching fourth-place finish after an intense overtime loss to Team USA in the bronze-medal match.
Undeterred by the setbacks of the previous year, Sweden is set to reintroduce nine players from the 2024 squad. This includes several members instrumental in the country’s gold-medal triumph at the Under-18 Men’s World Championship in 2022.
Magnus Hävelid, the accomplished coach who led the U18 team to glory, takes up the role of the coach for the 2024 World Juniors. Hävelid and his Junior Crowns will fight hard to shatter the prolonged gold medal drought haunting the nation.
The Swedish team, unfortunately, faces the absence of Leo Carlsson, a standout player in the age group. Carlsson is currently making waves with the Anaheim Ducks after being selected second overall in the 2024 NHL Draft.
Despite this setback, the roster boasts an impressive lineup featuring eight first-round NHL Draft picks. The Swedes are also armed with the unwavering support of the home crowd fueling their dreams. As the anticipation builds, all eyes are on Gothenburg, where Sweden aims to create history.
