When the Senators convened for their mid-April exit interviews with the media, it was quite evident that Alex DeBrincat had little intention of extending his stay in Ottawa. His demeanor during these interviews made it apparent that he was already mentally disengaged from the team and couldn’t wait to explore the possibilities of free agency.

It’s worth noting that the Senators acquired DeBrincat from the Chicago Blackhawks before the 2022 NHL draft, paying a considerable price to do so. The organization had high hopes of convincing him to remain in Ottawa. They were willing to invest in his potential and contribute to the team’s success. Alex DeBrincat’s conduct and attitude have effectively closed the door on any possibility of his return to the Senators. On July 9, Alex DeBrincat inked a four-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings valued at $7.85 million per season. In exchange for DeBrincat, the Senators received winger Dominik Kubalik, promising defenseman Donovan Sebrango, a conditional 2024 first-round draft pick, and Detroit’s 2024 fourth-round pick.
