On 10th August 2003, Manchester City’s new home stadium was inaugurated named  ‘Eastlands’. For the inauguration match, they invited the Catalan club Barcelona for a friendly match.

It was initially built for the Commonwealth Games for £110 million. Manchester converted it into their home. They spent another £30 million to add the football facilities.

In front of  47,726 people, City took the lead in the 38th minute, thanks to Nicolas Anelka’s strike. Barcelona’s Javier Saviola scored the equalizer at 58th minute which was denied again 9 minutes later by City’s new signing Trevor Sinclair.

Andrés Iniesta almost had netted the 2nd goal but was cleared off the line by Richard Dunne.

Nowadays we know Eastlands as Etihad Stadium.
