PSG manager confident that Lionel Messi can face Bayern despite injury

PSG manager Christophe Galtier said he anticipates Lionel Messi to be ready to play against Bayern Munich in their UCL round of 16 tie.

Despite being sidelined this weekend due to a hamstring injury, Paris Saint-Germain manager Christophe Galtier said he anticipates Lionel Messi to be ready to play against Bayern Munich in their Champions League round of 16 tie on Tuesday.

Messi strained his hamstring after playing the full 90 minutes in Wednesday’s French Cup loss to Marseille for PSG. In Ligue 1 so far this year, Messi has tallied 10 goals and 10 assists.

Galatier confirmed a report that the Argentine World Cup winner would miss this weekend’s match in Ligue 1 against AS Monaco. However, Galatier added that the player would return to practice on Monday in preparation for the match against Bayern at Parc des Princes.

Is Lionel Messi really fit to play?

“Leo felt muscle fatigue, he will resume training on Monday. He is not uncertain for Bayern,” Galtier said at a news conference Friday.

“We know the importance of Leo in our game. In his absence, we’ll have to play in a different way with a more solid, more compact team structure.

“Obviously going to Monaco without Leo is always annoying. Injuries happen when there is a sequence of games with a World Cup in the middle of the season. It’s up to me to have both a successful team while injecting freshness.” Read More: Thiago Silva extends contract with Chelsea Till 2024

Kylian Mbappe still recovering from Injury

Kylian Mbappe is already out for two more weeks due to injury, so PSG will be without the French forward for the first leg against the German champions.

“Concerning Kylian, the communication has been made. We talked about an unavailability of three weeks. Kylian is being treated,” Galtier said.

Achraf Hakimi, however, has recovered from a hamstring issue and will be available, according to Galtier. With 54 points from 22 games, PSG leads Ligue 1 by eight points over second-place Marseille. Monaco has 44 points, placing fourth.
