After Belgium’s early elimination from the FIFA World Cup 2022, star striker Eden Hazard declared his Retirement from international competition. After placing third in their group behind Morocco and Croatia, the second-ranked team was unable to advance to the round of 16. Hazard, the captain of Belgium at the World Cup, had a disappointing tournament and didn’t live up to the hype. The Real Madrid player hasn’t been at his best in the last few years as a result of frequent injuries, which have hurt his form and caused it to show in Qatar. As Belgium struggled to score goals in all three of their group stage games, Hazard had trouble coming up with answers for his squad.

Eden Hazard Retirement Note

Hazard, who debuted for Belgium in 2008 at the age of 17, wrote:

A page changes today… thank you for your affection. I appreciate all of your unwavering help. Since 2008, I appreciate you sharing so much joy with me. My international career will come to an end, I’ve decided. It is now time for succession. I’m going to miss you.

Hazard Career Glimpse

After making 126 senior appearances for his country and scoring 33 goals, Hazard announced his retirement from international football. Over the past ten or so years, the former Chelsea winger has served as the face of Belgium’s unsuccessful “golden generation.”

He represented his nation at the World Cups in 2014, 2018, and 2022. At the time, a third-place finish in Russia was the best result they could muster.

His performance in the 2016 UEFA European Championship is debatably his best in a major competition. Wales eliminated Belgium from the quarterfinals despite his one goal and four assists in five games.

The 2020 UEFA European Championship held a similar fate for them five years later. The eventual victors of Italy eliminated them this time.

Between 2012 and 2019, Hazard made 245 appearances for Chelsea, guiding the Stamford Bridge team to two Premier League championships and two Europa League triumphs.

Kevin De Bruyne, another member of his Belgium team, tweeted: “What a trip it has been. Salutations, Capi. You’ll be sorely missed!
