South Korea’s Casey Phair makes FIFA World Cup history when her team went up against Colombia earlier today at the Allianz Stadium. Casey at just 16 years old has become the youngest player in the history of the FIFA World Cup.
Flair, who celebrated her 16th birthday just 26 days ago, started the team on the bench and came in as a substitute in the 78th minute. Phair played for the South Korean under-17 team and helped them qualify for the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup 2024. She scored two goals against Tajikistan and three against Hong Kong. Casey Phair also played with the youth squads of the United States of America. Colin Bell, the South Korean coach has only positives when talking about the young talent. “She is the future”, said the Englishman.
Casey Phair broke the 24-year-old record held by Nigeria’s Ifeanyi Chiejine at 16 years and 38 days. Chiejine came in as a substitute against North Korea in the 1999 World Cup. The record for the youngest player to feature at FIFA Men’s World Cup goes to Norman Whiteside who played for Northern Ireland in the 1982 edition.
