WT20 2022: The Road Ahead For Team India

Rohit and co. will fly to Australia in October for the ICC Men's WT20s. With 2 months to go, where do they stand now?

The Men In Blue are upbeat to clinch yet another Asia Cup title in UAE to accomplish the hat-trick. The tournament will also be a perfect stage for the selectors and team management to finalize the squad for the WT20 Down under. The wounds of 2021 are still relatively fresh and with Rohit as captain fans will hope for a better outcome. The group stage exit was a tough pill for the players to swallow as none would have thought that the front-runners would crash out so early. Since then, the BCCI geared up for a revamp with the appointment of Dravid and Rohit at the helm.

2013-?: Team India’s agonies in ICC events

Post WT20 2021, the Men In Blue have played 24 T20Is altogether and have had the edge on 19 occasions. While except the tour of South Africa, Ireland, England and West Indies, the remaining games saw India as hosts. Across all the matches, the team management has tried out a plethora of combinations with a few IPL sensations making their debut to even backing senior players who have gone missing in the scheme of things of the recent past. The “problem of plenty” has been a serious concern for Team India in the last few years. The fact that establishing stability in the squad has been an uphill task for the selectors has been in a way, the biggest reason behind the team’s woes in ICC events.

Yet what draws in a lot of fire from the critics is it has been quite a long wait for an ICC title. The last time Team India savoured a global title win was back in 2013 when Dhoni‘s young brigade lifted the Champions Trophy. When Kohli stepped in as the new skipper, a new brand of aggression was infused and India mostly stayed at the top of the ICC Team rankings under his leadership. Kohli‘s stint as the captain ended abruptly as things seemed to fall apart. However, the Men In Blue are still on track and remain a powerhouse with a great mix of experience and youth marching ahead towards glory.
