Ms Dhoni featuring in an IPL Promo

The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) banned an IPL promo featuring MS Dhoni as they found it to be in violation of their code. The video featuring the former Chennai Super Kings skipper came under fire after the Consumer Unity and Trust Society (CUTS) filed a complaint.

The CUTS claimed that the advertisement glorified the violation of traffic rules, romanticising the idea of traffic violations. The video featured Dhoni playing the role of a bus driver (in an attempt to imitate Rajnikanth), where he stops the bus in the middle of the road to watch an IPL match. When a police officer comes on the scene and questions Dhoni’s behaviour, his response is that they are watching the super over of an IPL match. Hence, the officer proceeds to treat this like a normal scenario, mouthing the words ‘Ok Thala’ and leaving the scene.

The video was titled on Twitter “When it’s the #TATAIPL, fans can go to any extent to catch the action”.

The ASCI has since instructed the advertisement making company to either revise the video or completely withdraw it. The last date for Withdrawal is 20 April 2022 and the advertising company has accepted to withdraw the ad. The director of CUTS, George Cheriyan’s said, “The IPL has a huge fan following in and outside India. Therefore it has a huge responsibility to promote the cause of road safety and other such social issues. Instead, they come up with Promo films which are glorifying violation of traffic rules.”

Here’s how the internet reacted to the incident:

Besides attracting heat for featuring in the promo, Dhoni has come under immense criticism for taking the mantel away from Jadeja during the LSW match. Additionally, the former skipper had to bear the brunt of criticism for his incredibly slow innings vs PBKS as the Superkings lost without putting up a fight. Furthermore, the Chennai Super Kings are reeling at the bottom of the point table with three losses in 3 matches.
