Walid Regragui Coaching Career
After retiring, Regragui started football coaching, becoming Morocco’s national team’s assistant coach. However, his contract was terminated after the sacking of head coach Rachid Taoussi in October 2013.
Next year, he began as a head coach for the Fath Union Sport but left the club with mutual consent in 2020. He then became the head coach of Botola side Wydad AC in 2021 before leading the team to its 3rd CAF Championships League in 2022. In the final, Wydad AC defeated Al Ahly. Also, he became the second Moroccan manager to win the African Champions League (the first was Husseun Ammouta with the same team in 2017).
Regragui finally returned o the Moroccan side as the head coach for the national team after former head coach Vahid HalilhodžiÄ was sacked.
He led the national team to the knockout stage and the quarter-finals for the first time in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022. This made Morocco the first African country to reach the stage of the tournament. To the shock of most, the team reached the semi-final when they beat Portugal by 1-0, which was another first for them, creating history not just as a country but as the first Arab and African country to do so.
