Carlos Alcaraz believes Nick Kyrgios will be the favorite to stand a chance of beating Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon which is starting next month. Alcaraz recently lost the 2024 French Open final against Djokovic which saw the latter emerge triumphant at Grand Slam for record 23rd times.
Djokovic, who has now seven Wimbledon titles will be the overwhelming favorite to win the tournament. He will be eyeing to tie Roger Federer‘s record of eight Wimbledon titles. But his progress can be hampered by Kyrgios who got beaten by the Serb in the 2022 Wimbledon final.
“Nick Kyrgios has already played a final in Wimbledon and he’s very good on grass as well,” Alcaraz told reporters as per Eurosport when asked about his chances of challenging Djokovic at the grass-court Grand Slam event.
“I am not saying that I am not capable of beating Djokovic, but I think I have less chances than on other surfaces. I think that Kyrgios has more chances to defeat Djokovic than any other player,” he added. Also Read: Berlin Open 2024: Women’s Draw, Schedule, Players, Prize money, Live Streaming & More
Carlos Alcaraz admits he felt additional pressure while playing against Novak Djokovic
Carlos Alcaraz dealt with additional pressure while heading into the 2024 French Open semi-final against Novak Djokovic. That semi-final was one of the much-awaited matches of the year.
In the match, the Serbian won the first set but the 20-year-old bounced back to clinch the second one. After it, the youngster got cramps which restricted his movements, and would only win two games in the last two sets. Djokovic without breaking a sweat secured a thumping victory 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.
Looking back at the loss, Alcaraz admitted that he was physically fine but he was dealing with heavy pressure while heading into the match and couldn’t prepare himself well for it.
“Physically I was perfectly fine. The problem was that I put additional pressure on myself. I didn’t prepare myself well for the match; the first two sets demanded a lot from me and if we add the tensions that I put on immediately afterward, in the end, what happened to all of us happened you saw,” he told L’Equipe (via Punto de Break).
