Vijay was born on January 26, 1991, in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. Shankar began his cricketing career playing for Tamil Nadu in the domestic circuit.  He made his debut in first-class cricket in 2012. Shankar made his international debut for India in a T20I match in March 2018. He went on to make his ODI debut later that month. He has played a total of 12 ODIs and 9 T20Is for India so far, scoring 223 and 97 runs respectively. In the IPL, Shankar has played for Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Delhi Capitals. He has scored 584 runs in 43 matches at an average of 22.46 and has taken 11 wickets.
