Swedish tennis legend Bjorn Borg was set to be honored at a function on Tuesday along with Padma Shri awardee Vijay Amritraj in Bengaluru. But he politely declined the felicitation as Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai arrived late at the venue. The reason behind his leaving the venue is that he had to attend his son Leo’s match
“The Chief Minister was delayed due to some of his other commitments. We did inform him (CM) that Borg would be watching his son play and would not be able to be present for the felicitation. But CM was very sportive about the whole situation and decided to still come to the courts and watch some action,” an official from the organizing committee told the Deccan Herald. The function was set to start at 9:30 am but was postponed to 10:15 am because of the CM. Borg had to attend his son’s match, so he had to decline the ceremony. CM Bommai arrived at the venue at 11:15 am and later, he watched the game for a while before leaving.
Borg is currently in Bengaluru to support his son Leo, who is participating in the ongoing Bengaluru Open. He lost 2-6, 3-6 to Taiwanese player Yu Hsiou Hsu in the Round of 32 match.
Borg was the first player in Men’s tennis in the Open Era to win 11 Grand Slam singles, including six French Open and five back-to-back Wimbledon trophies and four consecutive French Open titles. “We did something really big for the sport,” Bjorn Borg on rivalry with John McEnroe
In an interaction with friend Vijay Amritraj at the Leela Palace, Borg recalled his iconic rivalry with John McEnroe. The two greats competed 14 times between 1978 and 1981 with each player winning seven matches. Their most memorable meeting was the 1980 Wimbledon final, which Borg emerged victorious.
“We became very close after the 1980 Wimbledon final. Before that, as everyone knows, he was a bit crazy on the court and expressed his feelings more. But in that particular match, he didn’t say a word. He got so much respect from other people all over because that was different from him. It was not only great for us, but for tennis. We did something really big for the sport,” Borg said.
