Melbourne: In the first Melbourne Derby of the season, The Gades defeated the Stars by 33 runs. The Gades after a failed batting delivered a masterclass defense led by a fifer by Tom Rogers.
Choosing to bowl first, The Stars did an exceptional job. They restricted the Gades to 141, a respectable target to win. Martin Guptill, Mackenzie Harvey, Shaun Marsh, and Jonathan Wells attempted in reviving the Gades. However, the quick fall of wickets on the opposite end ruined their efforts.
Luke Wood and Trent Boult picked up two wickets for the Stars. The rest three were shared by Adam Zampa, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Beau Webster.
Chasing the pretty easy target, the Stars failed big time. Tom Rogers nailed down the top order. Rogers picked up Joe Clarke in the first over. In his second over, Tom Rogers dismissed Beau Webster and Tom Rogers (nah, there’s no mistake here).
Marcus Stoinis departed in a short while followed by Hilton Cartwright. Nick Larkin steered the ship for the rest of the match. He managed to play slowly. He scored 48 off 40 including a few boundaries. Larkin could have easily helped in managing the target if he had a better opposite end.
Mujeeb-ur-Rahman took out Callaway and Nathan Coulter-Nile. Tom Rogers dismissed Wood and Kane Richardson eliminated Trent Boult until Zampa and Larkin remained. They extended the paly to 20 overs but the Gades were 30 runs too ahead.
The victory has helped the Gades to jump a place in the table as the Stars are still struck at seventh. The Stars play three-time champions Sixers in the next game while the Renegades play Hurricanes who are looking for their first spoil.
