FIFA World Cup 2022: France, Brazil, and Portugal are already in the last 16 while Canadian and Qatari chances are over

Doha: The first two rounds of the FIFA World Cup 2022 ended yesterday with the Portugal-Uruguay match. Among the thirty-two teams, five teams’ fates are sealed.

Three teams have qualified for the Round of Sixteen and two have no chance of qualifying. France defeated Australia 4-1 in the first match and edged past Denmark by 2-1. Thus, the Les Blues became the first team to qualify for the R16. Two teams qualified for the R16 yesterday. Casemiro’s screamer at 82′ fixed Brazil’s position at the last sixteen. Brazil defeated Serbia 2-0 in the first round thanks to Richarlison. In a game of winners of the first round, Brazil won against Switzerland.

Portugal and Ghana engaged in one of the most thrilling matches of the World Cup. The Navigadores defeated the Black Stars 3-2 in the first round and annihilated Uruguay yesterday. Thus, Cristiano Ronaldo joins Neymar and Mbappe in the last sixteen.

On the other hand, the hosts are out of the World Cup. Qatar is the second host to fail to qualify for the R16 after South Africa in 2010. The Maroons lost both fixtures, 2-0 against Ecuador in the first match and 3-1 against Senegal. The Maroons might not even win or draw a single game considering they go up against the Netherlands. Canada, who is one of the surprise inductees in the World Cup went down against Belgium in the tournament opener. Although they netted their first World Cup goal, Canada failed to beat Croatia. Two losses added misery to the team’s further qualification.

The fate of 27 others hangs in the balance. The last round is very crucial as the quest for thirteen other R16 entrants looms.
