Imagine being 18 years old and getting a call from the Ferrari team to race in an F1 Grand Prix. Moreover, with only one practice section, outperform experienced drivers in qualifying, finish in points in the race, and win Driver of the Day. All this is not an imagination, because Oliver Bearman’s dream debut made it true.
The youngster was called to make his F1 debut as Ferrari racing driver Carlos Sainz was diagnosed with appendicitis. Sainz was hospitalized, and Bearman replaced him for the Grand Prix. He impressed everyone with his performance, including several Formula 1 racers.
Charles Leclerc, after the Grand Prix, said:
“Seventh in your first F1 race, and he only got in the car in FP3. It’s just hugely impressive. Everyone has noticed how talented he is. I guess it is just a matter of time before Oliver Bearman comes here in F1!”
Following the race, Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur said:
“The fact Oliver Bearman did a short weekend without the FP1 and FP2 without any mistakes is unrealistic, honestly. I was completely impressed by his performance.”
As mentioned, Bearman impressed everyone with his performances. Moreover, the most amazing fact is that he finished in points despite struggling in the initial laps of the race.
Oliver Bearman’s Dream Debut
- Only one practice session in an F1 car
- Gives a lap time of 1:29:306 in the FP3
- Improves his lap time in qualifying to 1:28:642
- Starts P11 in the race
- Finished seventh in the race
- Bags six crucial points for the team as well as the Driver of the Day award
