The legendary tennis player Bjorn Borg visited India to attend his son, Leo in action at the Chennai Open. Apart from speaking on how Sweden and India could collaborate with cross-country promotions for youngsters in the game, the 11-time Grand Slam winner also revealed another great, Rafael Nadal‘s training routine.
Borg has always hailed the contributions of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal to tennis and claims there won’t be a group of players like them in the future. Nadal who is a 14-time French Open champion has been compared with the Swede as the latter is a six-time champion of the clay court major. “We used to spend five or hours a day practicing. At the Laver Cup, they used to open the courts at six am because Rafa would just serve for an hour before he actually started practice. I have never seen a player spend so much time on a tennis court. He’s one of the greats; he commits so much time to his game. It’s unbelievable,” Borg said in a conversation titled ‘The Legends Hold Court’ with Vijay Amritraj on the sidelines of the ATP tournament. Bjorn Borg sheds light on Leo’s career
Borg’s 19-year-old son Leo, meanwhile, lost at the Chennai ATP to H. Medjedovic in the first round. To attend their son’s match, Borg and his wife Patricia flew to Chennai. Another reason is Patricia wanted to visit India.
“Leo has his own team. He is very motivated and works really hard on and off the court. We have a very good relationship. I ask him if he wants to know anything about tennis, and he says, ‘I have nothing to ask you!’ He is hungry for tennis,” Leo addressed the media on the eve of the ATP Challenger-100 men’s international tennis tournament.
Leo’s idol is not his father, but the 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal. He even trained at the Rafe Nadal Academy in 2020.
Meanwhile, the 66-year-old Borg has enjoyed being the captain of Europe for six years. All the big four- Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray- are on his team. The Vancouver event in September this year would be the last time Borg will lead the Laver Cup. Also Read: Novak Djokovic Expected To Miss Out Indian Wells List
