Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild, a former prodigy, produced the biggest upset so far in the ongoing 2024 French Open. Ranked 172, Seyboth Wild stunned second-seed Daniil Medvedev 7-6(7-5), 6-7(6-8), 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
For the fifth time, the Russian out crashed out of French Open in the first round itself. Though he has claimed the red dirt is not his strongest suit, he actually entered the tournament as one of the favorites, for he lifted the Italian Open trophy last week.
And at the same time, Seyboth Wild, who hasn’t won a Tour-level match this year, played the first round in Paris without a main-draw win at a Grand Slam. Beating the world number two made Seyboth Wild the first player since 2000 to knock out a top-two seed in the opening round at Roland Garros.
“I watched Daniil play since I was junior and beating him on such a court is a dream come true,” Seyboth Wild said after the match.
“I wanted to get the angles, using my forehand against his, and it worked pretty well. It was tough. I started cramping in the second set, and I couldn’t serve the way I wanted to. I stayed strong mentally, and I played my best tennis. I’m really happy with the way I played.”
“I don’t know whether my coach will let me rest all day. That’s the way tennis works. You stay on the court, and you work hard, and you get your reward.” Also Read: Stefanos Tsitsipas Vs Roberto Carballes Baena Match Prediction, Head-To-Head, Preview, And Live Stream | French Open
Who is Thiago Seyboth Wild?
Thiago Seyboth Wild is a former Brazilian prodigy who claimed his first ATP Tour title in Santiago in March 2020, becoming the first player born in the 2000s to win an ATP Tour title, surprisingly, even before the likes of star youngsters Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune. Prior to this, he also clinched the US Open boys’ title in 2018.
Though he would have broken into the top 100 in the rankings, a series of tough seasons compounded with injuries halted his development.
However, before arriving in France, Seyboth Wild played a series of Challenger tournaments, winning 21 out of 24 of them, including two titles in Vina del Mar and Buenos Aires. He will now face Guido Pella or Quentin Halys in the second round.Â
