Former World No.1 Justine Henin said though Russia’s Daniil Medvedev gets frustrated and upset on the court, he still has a nice personality. The seven-time Grand Slam champion also praised the 5th ranked player for being honest, despite not liking his on-court doings.
At the Monte-Carlo Masters event, Medvedev outclassed Alexander Zverev 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7). After the match, both players accused each other of poor behavior.
During the match, Medvedev left the court for a bathroom break, which irked the German and he expressed about Medvedev’s sportsmanship during the press conference after the match, calling out Medvedev for being “one of the most unfair players in the world.” Medvedev then asked Zverev to look in the mirror before accusing others. But Henin praised the Russian for his apology to Diego Schwartzman while speaking to Eurosport. “We know Daniil admits he’s human, sometimes he’s not perfect,” Henin said. “He talked about Diego Schwartzman, I think it’s more serious with Zverev. Daniil can sometimes get frustrated, and upset, and we don’t understand. He’s original, it’s how he expresses his feelings. I don’t want to blame him, it’s not that bad. We like him as a player, his personality.”
“Sometimes he likes to play with the opponent, with the umpire, the crowd, and sometimes his team,” she added. “Sometimes I don’t like what Daniil is doing on the court but always keeps smiling. Medvedev, who was playing for his fifth title at the Monte-Carlo Masters, lost in the quarter-final match to finalist Holger Rune 6-3, 6-4. He has been enjoying a great season so far, having won the title in Rotterdam, Doha, Dubai, and Miami. He has lost just four matches and won 31 in 2024. Zverev will be seen next at the BMW Open on Wednesday (April 19).
