Word No. 8 Jannik Sinner‘s coach Simone Vagnozzi recently talked about the Italian’s Grand Slam future by citing Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.
The 21-year-old has been looked upon as one of the future stars when he reached his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinals in his first French Open tournament. He also became the youngest player since Novak Djokovic in 2008 to reach the quarterfinals of all four Grand Slam tournaments. In a recent interview with Punto de Break, Sinner’s coach said that though the Italian player wants to win important tournaments and become No.1, they are still unsure of his Grand Slam success.
“It is difficult to say these things, to ensure that a player will win Grand Slam tournaments, who knows? Jannik has the talent, he is a guy who works hard, who wants to win important tournaments and wants to be No.1, but then nobody knows,” the coach said.
He then cited the examples of the great Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic to back his thoughts.
“Of course, he has the potential, but I don’t think Federer when had zero Grand Slams thought of winning 20, or Nadal and Djokovic 22. This is based a lot on experience, you have to win the first one and then we’ll see,” he added. Jannik Sinner is yet to win a Grand Slam in his career
Though Jannik Sinner has won seven titles, he is yet to win his major Grand Slam. This year, his first title came in Montpellier and he finished as runner-up in Rotterdam and Miami.
He also advanced to the semi-finals in Indian Wells and Monte Carlo in 2024. Though he hasn’t won the four Major titles so far, his team is not focusing on his victories anymore but is focusing on improvement.
“Now the team does not have the ambition to win anymore, the objective is to improve to be closer every day to winning those great titles and the tournaments that come,” the Italian coach said.
