The former World Number 9 Fabio Fognini made headlines when he suggested Rafael Nadal wasn’t injured in the Quarter Finals match.
Nadal had an epic five-set match against Taylor Fritz, where he overcame Fritz 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (10-4). His family urged him to retire after calling for the trainer in the second set. But he then went on playing to win the four-hour, 21-minute nail-biting battle.
But Fognini, 35, wasn’t convinced and went on to slam Nadal on his Instagram story.
Fogini, in his Instagram story, put a headline of an article after the match. He underlined the part that said Nadal had come back from an injury and wrote: “For sure. Guys stop believe in what you read PLEASE!!!.”
Despite Fognini’s apparent accusations, Nadal sported brown strapping on the right side of his belly to try and help ease his injury during the game.
The Spaniard was supposed to face Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in the Semi-Finals. But in the post-match interview, Nadal hinted that he “doesn’t know” if he will be fit to play again on Friday.
On Thursday, Nadal in a press conference said he will pull out of the tournament because of an abdominal injury. Nick Kygrios got breezed to the Finals of the tournament because of the Walkover.
