The Super Bowl LVIII was expected to be a thrilling contest, and the fans got what they wanted. The game went overtime, and the Kansas City Chiefs won by 25-22 despite the 49ers scoring first. This was because of the new NFL playoff overtime rules.
Usually, in overtime, the team scoring first wins the game. But under the playoff overtime rule, things are different. Here is how the rule works:
NFL Playoff Overtime Rules
- Both teams will have the opportunity to possess the ball in overtime in the postseason.
- If the score is tied after each team has possessed the ball, the next score wins.
- If the team that kicked off to start the overtime period scores a safety on the receiving team’s initial possession, the team that kicked off is the winner.
The San Francisco 49ers added three points to their tally in overtime after scoring a field goal. And when the Kansas City Chiefs got possession, they had a touchdown that helped them clinch another Super Bowl championship.
However, the playoff overtime rules resulted in mixed emotions among players.

“You know what? I didn’t even realize the overtime rules were different in playoffs. I assume you just want the ball to score a touchdown and win. I guess that’s not the case. I don’t know the strategy there. We hadn’t talked about it, no.”
Similarly, Arik Armstead said:
“I didn’t even know about the new playoff overtime rule, so it was a surprise to me. They put it on the scoreboard, and everyone was like, ‘Oh, even if you score, they get a chance still’.”
