NBA trade deadline blockbuster: Nets deal Kevin Durant to Suns

Durant is the third superstar to force his way out of Brooklyn in less than a year, following Kyrie Irving's move to Dallas.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Phoenix Suns and Brooklyn Nets are close to arranging a trade that would bring 13-time All-Star Kevin Durant to Phoenix.

The transaction is anticipated to include a group of players and draught compensation for the Nets. According to sources, the Suns will also trade forward Jae Crowder to the Nets. Crowder hasn’t played this year after asking to be traded in the offseason. Before the deadline on Thursday at 3 p.m., they might include Crowder in another trade.

The Nets also are sending veteran forward T. J. Warren to the Suns, and receiving Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, four first-round picks and a 2028 pick swap. They’ll get unprotected picks in 2024, 2025, 2027 and 2029.

Durant put in a request for a trade during the offseason, expressing a strong desire to play for the Suns with Chris Paul and Devin Booker. Since neither Paul nor Booker have ever won an NBA championship, the inclusion of Durant most likely would have elevated them to preseason favourites. Durant withdrew the request before the season started, since no offers came through throughout the summer. Currently in his first year of a four-year, $194 million contract agreement, Kevin Durant joined the Nets’ Big 3 of James Harden, Kyrie Irving, and Durant in August 2021. None of them are no longer sporting a Nets jersey. At the last trade deadline, they dealt Harden to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for a transaction that sent Ben Simmons to Brooklyn.

Trading for Durant is an all-in move for the Suns, who just officially unveiled Ishbia earlier on Wednesday. This is a franchise that is vying for its first NBA championship.
