Draymond Green opens up about poverty, “We really were poor”

Draymond Green, a four-time NBA champion, was pivotal in the Golden State Warriors’ triumphs in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022.

He grew up in Michigan and assisted the Spartans to two Final Four appearances during his college years. Green then signed a three-year, $2.6 million contract with the Warriors after being picked up in the 2012 draft.

Today with a net worth of more than $50 million, Green remembered his family’s poor financial condition before 2012.

Draymond Green recalls his life before his NBA career

Currently, Green is in the third year of his four-year, $100 million contract with the Warriors. Recently, he made an appearance on the CHECC’N-IN podcast. He spoke about his mother’s tough financial condition before getting picked up by the Warriors in 2012.

He said, “My rookie year, my accountant said, ‘Hey, you should claim your mom on your taxes’… I had to find out how much money she made. My mom was making $17K a year. I said, ‘Wow, we really were poor.’ She never let me see that.”

From $17,000 a year to a $2.6 million contract, indeed it was life-changing for Draymond Green and his family.
