As a result of his attendance at the event, they were able to select Kyrie Irving with the first overall pick. Who later gained notoriety for donning bow ties at the age of 14. He continued to represent the squad in 2012, when they finished fourth. But again in 2013, when they were selected first overall.

When the news of Gilbert’s passing was made public, tributes for the 26-year-old soon started to come in. The Cavaliers honoured Gilbert by donning bowties on their warm-up jackets. ‘We want to give a particular gratitude to Cleveland fans for always accepting Nick and providing him support and love over the years,’ Nick’s father, said at the start of the season.
We’re leveraging the Cavs’ platform this year to spread awareness of NF and the millions of people affected by the illness. Although there isn’t a cure yet, we hope that our efforts will fund innovative research. We therefore ask that you keep Nick and all others fighting NF in your hearts as you support the Cavaliers this season.
After Nick’s death the Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan also tweeted his condolences. ‘Nick inspired people everywhere with his bravery and brought joy to everyone he met. All of Detroit has the Gilbert family in our prayers today.’
