Rookie players are those who haven’t played a single game in the NBA. Such players who haven’t played a single game in the NBA are given a rookie contract regardless of their age. Yes, there is no age limit for a player to sign a rookie contract.

Players are selected through the NBA draft, and the first-round players are offered a four-year rookie contract. The amount of the rookie contract is fixed and under the $12 million mark. The first two players selected in the draft are paid the highest amount of money, and as the players are selected, the amount keeps getting lower but not below the $3 million mark.

Later, once their rookie contract is about to expire, the team and players mutually sit down and decide about an extension contract. The team can also add one extra year to their four-year contract with a value based on their fourth-year contract value. Most of the time, teams offer extension contracts to their rookie players worth millions rather than adding an extra year.
