La Liga final day thriller: Valladolid dropped to Segunda division while Celta beats Barca to survive.

Six teams went into the weekend hoping to avoid the drop, a win would have guaranteed safety to all of them.

The La Liga 2022-23 season came to close this weekend, with European places at stake and fight for survival, there was a full slate of games on the final weekend.

With Barcelona crowned as champions, Real Madrid as well as Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad all finished the campaign in top-four. Osasuna clinched a European berth on the final day for the first time in over 15 years.

With the top-half of the table already settled, six teams went into the weekend hoping to avoid the drop, a win would have guaranteed safety to all of them, but, Ronaldo Nazario’s Valladolid failed to score against Getafe and was dropped to Segunda division.

“A hard night, a very hard night, which with the passing of time will give way to renewed hope for the start of next season, Now it is time to lick the wounds, to apologise to the fans who have been up to the task and to work hard to lay the foundations for the next promotion.” said Valladolid in a statement. Cadiz, Valencia and Almeria all drew their last match yet a goalless draw wasn’t enough for Valladolid to avoid the drop. Meanwhile Celta Vigo ended their campaign with an impressive 2-1 win over Champions Barcelona, thanks to Gabri Veiga’s double, the win helped them jump from 17th to 13th in the table.

“We all deserve this together, so much joy,” goalscorer Veiga told DAZN. “It’s true my level dropped a little recently, but I was able to hit a very high level with the help of my team mates tonight, with all the people around me. We were able to come out and get the win.”

Almeria narrowly escaped the drop with an 87th-minute penalty from Adri Embarba, Almeria were behind twice in the game against already relegated Espanyol.Valencia were under the threat of relegation for the first time since it was promoted to the Spanish top-flight in 1987, Valencia survived after 1-1 draw with Real Betis, thanks to Lopez’s 71st minute equaliser.

“We have achieved it with a lot of hard work, but I am not entirely happy, because this season, since the World Cup break, has been disastrous, lamentable,” Valencia captain Jose Gaya told Movistar.“I feel very bad for the people … because they don’t deserve everything we have suffered. And we have also suffered and thanks to their drive we have achieved it. Hopefully this will be useful for the following years, because we have played with fire.”
