Which major records of Virat Kohli are set to break in IPL 2022?

Few of King Kohli's major IPL landmarks are currently on stake

The ongoing season of IPL has witnessed the rise of several youngsters, the resurgence of veterans, and some shocking letdowns. If heavyweights like MI and CSK are languishing at the bottom of the points table, modern-day greats like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have gone through a rough patch so far. IPL’s leading run-scorer, ex RCB captain Virat Kohli registered two consecutive golden ducks for the first time in a single season. While fans hope for the run machine to rediscover his old mojo back, many cricketers meanwhile are now on the cusp of breaking Kohli’s apparently infrangible massive records.

Most hundreds in a season

Rewind to 2016, and you will know why Kohli is the King! A dream year for RCB, skipper Kohli led from the front scoring 4 centuries in a single season – a feat that seems too good to be true in the shortest format of the game. In 2022, his record finds a new challenger, another Royal champion, Jos Buttler. The swashbuckling opener has already scored 3 tons in the season as fans draw parallel with his form to that of Kohli’s back in 2016.

Most runs in a season

In 2016, the run machine aggregated close to 1000 runs in a single season. In 16 matches, the then RCB captain scored 973 runs at a phenomenal average of 81.08 and a monstrous strike rate of over 150. Once again, it is Buttler who has stood tall to go past Kohli and create new milestones. In just 8 games, the wicket-keeper batter is just one short of 500 runs. If his purple patch continues no doubt, plenty of records will be shattered to give rise to new ones.

Fastest Player to score 6000 runs in IPL

Last year against RR, Kohli smashed an unbeaten 72* to be the first player to reach the 6000 run mark in IPL. In 2022, Shikhar Dhawan became the only second player to enter the elite club. Kohli took 188 games to reach the landmark while Gabbar took 199 matches. The next in line who could surpass Kohli is DC opener, David Warner. Perhaps the most consistent overseas batter in IPL, the pocket-size dynamite has aggregated over 5710 runs in just 156 matches.

Kohli's reaction

Records are meant to be broken, no matter how huge they might be. But what fans will hope for is the resurgence of the modern-day master and bring back the heroics of 2016 alive once again. IPL 2022 has been perhaps one of his worst ever IPL seasons and clearly, he has been the center of a lot of talks about whether he will ever again revive to be the gamechanger that he used to be once. But as wise men say, Form is temporary but Class is permanent. The wait for the truculent Kohli is on, and only time will tell when the tables will be turned over once again.
