The Indian Premier League famously called the IPL, is one of the biggest and most competitive leagues. For two months, ten teams compete against each other for the championship. It is the dream of every team to lift an IPL trophy, and a few teams haven’t. On the other hand, two teams have lifted the trophy five times each. The Chennai Super Kings are led by MS Dhoni, and the Mumbai Indians are led by Rohit Sharma.
There has been a fierce rivalry between both teams since the establishment of the IPL, and it is still on. The CSK vs. MI rivalry is often referred to as the El-Clasico of the IPL, and both Dhoni and Rohit are the main reasons. It was not just a rivalry between the best team but also for the best captain in IPL history.
Well, we won’t see the rivalry again as the Mumbai Indians have a new captain in Hardik Pandya. The 2024 season was the last time Rohit led the Mumbai Indians, and from the 2024 season on, Pandya will lead the team. So let us look back at Rohit Sharma’s captaincy journey with the Mumbai Indians.

Rohit Sharma captaincy journey with the Mumbai Indians.
It was the 2013 season when Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting were a part of the team, and Rohit Sharma was handed over the captaincy mid-season. Sharma was 26 years old, and no one knew this young lad would change the history of Mumbai Indians. Six games for the Mumbai Indians were over in the season, and they had won only three.
Following Sharma’s captaincy in the season, Mumbai only lost three games and defeated the Chennai Super Kings in the finals. This was the first IPL title and second trophy in the Mumbai Indians cabinet. With a record of 13-6, the team qualified for the Champions League T20. Similarly, the captaincy and team performances didn’t dip, and they won their second Champions League T20 title.
It was 26-year-old Rohit Sharma who led the team in two different campaigns and won them two back-to-back titles. Since then, Rohit Sharma has led the team in five IPL finals (including 2024) and has a success rate of 100% in IPL finals.
In 11 seasons of Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, the Mumbai Indians made seven playoff appearances and won five IPL titles. Undoubtedly, Rohit Sharma is the best captain in IPL history.
