Former Pakistan cricketer Umar Gul appointed new bowling coach of Afghanistan

The initial contract is till the end of the year.

Former Pakistan pacer, Umar Gul, has been named as Afghanistan‘s bowling coach. He will resume his duties in the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe where they are set to play three ODIs and as many T20Is.

The former right-arm pacer has been given the role for a year. This will be Gul’s first coaching assignment in international cricket after serving as the bowling coach of Quetta Gladiators in the 2021 season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

“Gul was recently employed by the Afghanistan Cricket Board as the bowling consultant for the recently held training and preparation camp in UAE in April. The Pakistani veteran worked with the fast bowlers in our national lineup and considering his effectiveness in the camp as well as based on the need, it was decided to offer him a permanent contract as the national team’s bowling coach,”

Gul was roped in by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) as its bowling consultant during the side’s training and preparation camp in Abu Dhabi in April. He will join his former Pakistan teammate Younis Khan who had joined in as a batting consultant for the camp.

Umar Gul has played 237 international matches for Pakistan, taking 427 wickets, and is regarded as one of the most successful fast bowlers in the country’s history, especially in T20Is.
