Melbourne: Clad in Indigenous Jerseys, Melbourne Stars redeems themselves as they paid respect to the legend, Shane Warne. Thanks to Joe Clarke’s century, The Stars defeated the Hurricanes at MCG.
After being sent to bat by Matthew Wade, Tom Rogers and Joe Clarke began the opening for the Stars. The pair set up a fifty-run partnership before Rogers was taken out by Shadab Khan at the end of the powerplay. Even though there was not much of a solid knock by any other Stars batter, they gave Joe good support. The English batter made a fifty-plus run partnership in three wickets. In addition to the opening wicket, Hilton Cartwright and Beau Webster assisted in the 50+ partnerships.
The Stars made a striking performance, a stark contrast to their inaugural match against Thunder. Joe Clarke shined with 101 runs off 66 balls.
Amongst the bowlers, no one made much of an impression on the Tasmanian team. Patrick Gabriel Dooley’s wicket of Marcus Stoinis drew attention to his specific way and the spin.
The target set by the Stars was 184. The Hurricanes did not get the same steam that the Stars had. They were slow and also wickets were falling in short intervals. Additionally, The strike rate of the opening wickets was sub-par. The Hurricanes captain Matthew Wade attempted a steered ship in 35 runs off 35 balls, un-T20-like. At the end of the 16th over, the Hurricanes required 77 runs off 24 balls to win the match. The target although tough seemed achievable with two power hitters on the crease.
James Neesham and Tim David looked explosive as boundaries flew for an over. However, Luke Wood’s eighteenth over dismissed the hope as he took out both of the hard hitters. The tailenders could not find the right pace or the ropes. In successive overs, the Hurricanes plummeted and finally lost by 38 runs.
The Stars shone brightly at the MCG with the powerful bowling attack. The depth of the fierce bowling led by captain Zampa is a testament to the future games. Luke Wood and Adam Zampa took three wickets each. On the other hand, Coulter-Nile took two while Boult took one.
Joe Clarke was adjudged the Man of the Match for his striking century. His ton made the difference between both sides on a difficult batting pitch.
