Eva Kaili is a Greek politician (center-left Pasok party) and serves as a Member of the European Parliament. She became the vice-president of the European Parliament in January this year until her arrest in December 2022. The 44-year-old is also a former Member of the Hellenic Parliament. She also worked as a news presenter for the Greek television channel MEGA Channel before her political career.

Kaili was born on October 26th, 1978 to Alexandros Kailis and Maria Ignatiadou. Her father, Alexandros, who was born in Istanbul, is a General Director at the Central Macedonia Regional Government. He is also a Mechanical and Electrical engineer. Her mother, Maria grew up in Imathia and was of Asia Minor Greek descent.
Kaili studied civil engineering and architecture at the university of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She earned her Master of Arts in International and European Affairs at the University of Piraeus. The Belgian federal police conducted at least 16 raids across Brussels and revealed a shocking scam involving the FIFA World Cup host Qatar. As per the reports, the police recovered at least 600,000 Euros in cash along with mobile phones and computers.
Amongst the five people the police arrested, Eva Kaili was one of them, for charges of criminal money laundering, criminal organization, and corruption. Also, a suitcase of cash was found with Kaili’s father at her home.
The Socialist and Democrats Group, to which Kaili belonged, said it had a “zero tolerance” policy for corruption and that it would carry out an independent investigation. She was suspended from the group as well as from the Greek center-left Pasok party. She was suspended from her duties as one of 14 vice presidents.
Kaili’s partner Francesco Giorgi was also arrested. Another onne includes Pier Antonio Panzeri- a former member of the European Parliament.
On December 12, it was announced that all of Kaili and her close family members’ assets were frozen by the Greek Anti-Money Laundering Authority. The assets include all bank accounts, safes, companies, and other financial assets.
