Madrid Open CEO issues apology to women’s doubles finalists for failing to give them a chance to speak

During the 2024 Madrid Open, several players and fans accused the tournament of its 'sexist' approach.

During the 2024 Madrid Open, several players and fans accused the tournament of its ‘sexist’ approach. Fans observed the ball girls wearing extra revealing skirts, especially during men’s matches. World No.1 Iga Swiatek complained about the tournament’s schedule as her final against Aryna Sabalenka crossed 1 am.

Then there was the cake controversy. Men’s World No.2 Carlos Alcaraz and Women’s World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka shared their birthday on 5th May which the tournament celebrated. However, their cake sizes grabbed the eyeballs. Alcaraz’s cake was much bigger than Sabalenka and this did not go well with the fans at all. And at last, the women’s doubles finalists were not given the chance to speak up after the match. The pair of Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad Maia defeated Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff. After the match, Gauff took to Twitter to share she did not get the chance to speak and so did Azarenka. Both men’s and women’s singles finalists, as well as the men’s doubles finalists, were given the opportunity to speak after their matches. Madrid Open CEO did not address other concerns

After all the controversy, the Madrid Open CEO Gerard Tsobanian issued an apology for failing to give a chance to the women’s doubles finalists to speak after the match. However, he did not address other concerns raised during the tournaments.

We sincerely apologize to all the players and fans who expect more of the Mutua Madrid Open tournament. Not giving our women’s doubles finalists the chance to address their fans at the end of the match was unacceptable and we have apologized directly to Victoria, Beatriz, Coco, and Jessica,” Tsobanian’s statement read.

We are working internally and with the WTA to review our protocols and are committed to improving our process moving forward. We made a mistake and this will not ever happen again,” he added.
