World No.6 Daniil Medvedev talked about the hatred top players receive from social media fans. The Russian enjoyed the No.1 spot for 16 weeks in 2022 before slumping to the current position.
He is also enjoying his 18-match winning streak, after defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 7-5 in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Indian Wells on Wednesday to reach another semi-final this season. He previously lifted the Rotterdam, Doha, and Dubai ATP titles.
After the win against Fokina, Medvedev, in the press conference opened up about how the top spot invites pressure on a player and also revealed how he handled those things. Also Read: Iga Swiatek Vs Sorana Cirstea Match Prediction, Head-To-Head, Preview, And Live Stream- Indian Wells 2024
“For sure, the pressure is not easy because you know that everyone expects a lot from you. I think that taught me even more because for sure when I was 20 and just coming up, you love social media, you love reading all the comments about yourself, how people say, ‘Okay, he’s going to do good,’ or even, ‘He’s a bad player,’ and when you’re young, you sometimes answer to them, ‘No, I’m going to do good.’
And this pressure of being No.1, for sure [attracts] a lot of haters. And that’s normal. Novak [Djokovic] has a lot of haters. Even Rafa [Nadal] and Roger [Federer] somehow have them. You’re like how is this possible? They shouldn’t have,” Medvedev added. Also Read: “Like The Anti-Hero Sometimes”- Chris Evert Warns That Novak Djokovic Will Turn More Dangerous After US Ban
Daniil Medvedev says pointing out his mistakes is the job of his coach
However, Medveded, 27, has learned to take less care about the hatred on social media to focus more on his game and the people close to him, and that’s the only way which kept him “stay sane“.
Medveded then talked about the various opinions thrown upon him if a match doesn’t end in his favor. The tennis pundits and fans, who are always ready to highlight the area where he needs to improve are of no value to the Russian because it’s the coach he listens to, and “he’s the only person who can kind of tell you this.”
He will face America’s Frances Tiafoe in the semi-final of the 2024 Indian Wells on Saturday (March 17). Also Read: Emma Raducanu Vs Danka Kovinic Match Prediction, Head-To-Head, Preview, And Live Stream- Indian Wells 2024
