Veteran batter Aaron Finch announced his retirement from international play on Tuesday. He was Australia’s longest-serving captain in the shortest format of the game. Finch has announced his retirement from Twenty20 Internationals after stepping down as the Australian team’s ODI captain last year. Australia’s first ICC World T20 championship was led by Finch in 2021.
Finch will continue to play for Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League, where he is Australia’s most successful captain in T20I cricket history (BBL). After the Men from Down failed to successfully defend their T20 World Cup title at home in 2022, Finch’s place in the Australian team came under scrutiny. Last year’s T20 World Cup hosts Australia were unable to advance past the group stage.
Finch, one of the best batters in T20 cricket, made his debut for Australia against England in 2011. Over the course of his illustrious international career, Finch scored 8,804 runs. For Australia, the seasoned batsman also scored 17 ODI centuries and two T20I tonnes. The highest score in a T20I was scored by the seasoned batter against Zimbabwe in 2018 when he scored 172 runs in just 76 balls. Finch had previously broken his own mark for the highest T20I score. The third-highest score in T20Is is another record that Finch currently holds. The extraordinary feat was accomplished in 2013 by the Australian opener, who scored an astounding 156 runs off just 63 balls against England in Southampton. The 36-year-old represented Australia in 146 ODIs, 103 T20Is, and five Test matches.

“Realising that I won’t be playing on until the next T20 World Cup in 2024, now is the right moment step down and give the team time to plan and build towards that event. I’d like to thank my family, especially my wife Amy, my team-mates, Cricket Victoria, Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association for their support to allow me to play the game I love at the highest level. I also want to say a huge thank you to all the fans who have supported me throughout my international career,” Finch said in a statement.
“Team success is what you play the game for and the maiden T20 World Cup win in 2021 and lifting the ODI World Cup on home soil in 2015 will be the two memories I cherish the most. To be able to represent Australia for 12 years and play with and against some of the greatest players of all time has been an incredible honour,” Finch added.
