The stadium bears the name of Veer Narayan Singh Binjhwar, a landowner from Sonakhan who led the 1857 war in Chhattisgarh for Indian independence. It is the fourth-largest cricket stadium worldwide and the third-largest cricket stadium in India. There are approximately 65,000 seats in the stadium. A practice match between the Chhattisgarh state team and the Canada national cricket team was played on this ground in 2010, which was inaugurated in 2008.
